Despite industry experts condemning Stephen Conroy’s (our new Telecommunications minister) plan to filter the internet in Australia the government is about to waste tens of millions of dollars on technology that will slow down the internet. Well I finally received the Shift and it is certainly living up to its reputation. By far the best UMPC and with HSDPA it makes this unit completely ultra mobile. For $1899 plus a NextG sim card you have a notebook replacement with an excellent keyboard and a 7 day battery life (on snapvue). Further Details here. I’m not sure why HTC have cut down the Win Mobile 6 platform on the second processor and called it SnapVue as it is completely useless except for very basic email tasks. Luckily there is a “Liberate your HTC Shift” hack which at least gives you Office Mobile and a few other must haves - here.
Smartphones are becoming very useful devices and far from the compromises of a few years ago. Windows Mobile 6 is a big step from 5 and functionality is more closely focused around phone first pda second… oh and dual processors help. I have had the HTC Touch Cruise for two months and highly recommend it for any business user or anyone who travels.
